The Brief
Mountain Village is a Yup'ik community on the Yukon River in rural Alaska — rich in culture, history, and natural wonder, but nearly invisible to outside visitors. The town needed an identity that honored its heritage while opening doors to sustainable tourism.
The Problem
Despite being one of the most culturally distinct communities in Alaska, Mountain Village had no cohesive brand, no tourism infrastructure, and no way for interested visitors to discover and connect with the place.
The Insight
Travelers are exhausted by manufactured tourism brands. Our research showed that the most powerful thing Mountain Village had was something money can't buy — a living, breathing culture that has survived for thousands of years in one of the world's most extreme environments.
The Strategy
We built the brand around the community's own voice, imagery, and stories. Every element — from the logo system to the vacation planner — was developed with village elders, youth, and local artists. The brand belonged to Mountain Village before it belonged to any campaign.
Creative Execution
We delivered a complete identity system including logo, color palette, typography, photography direction, and brand voice guidelines. The launch included a destination newsletter, a vacation planner, and a seasonal advertising campaign targeting adventure travelers and cultural tourism enthusiasts.
